A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. -Marcus Garvey

My sisters and I are first generation Americans. Both our parents and everyone before them were born in the Caribbean. Our mother’s family is from Jamaica. Our fathers family is from all over the Dutch West Indies. St. Maarten, Aruba, Curaçao, Grenada, and some other islands that only West Indians know and care about. (ei. St. Eustatius). So basically, we’re very Caribbean. As I learn to love myself more, I can’t help but learn to love my heritage more as well, and embrace what it has contributed to who I am.

Our CARIBBEAN ROOTS collection is dedicated to our last living grandparent, Alix Matheson, who at 94 years young has lived to see nine great grandchildren and counting.

To my grandparents, my angels watching over me, Lileathe, Winkworth and Leonard.

To the many sacrifices they made for their family’s future.

To the parts of them they felt they had to drop away to get ahead in this country.

To the parts of them that will never fade away.

Your work was not in vain.

Your heritage will not be lost.
